Roots of Corruption

Filipino values are said to be one of the things we should be proud of as a Filipino. For years, I’ve heard this line often. Whenever the topic is about being Filipino, television shows and    radio segments frequently have values on the top list. I feel good after hearing these things but everything slowly changed. Questions that gradually pop up in my mind made me realize that, values cannot be considered good or bad. We tend forgot the negative side because we focused so much to its positive side.
As I was finding some pieces of writings on the internet, I saw an article of Senator Edgardo J. Angara entitled “How culture matters in corruption”. He cited Filipino values such as religion and family ties as some of the reasons of corruption in our country. To support and explain further his idea, he compared and contrast these Filipino values to the values of other countries. He found out that Filipinos doesn’t care too much on social development merely because we are more concerned on our family and on ourselves. In the end he clearly said that we cannot change our values but we can still develop and enhance it. He said, “Squashing corruption means finding solutions based on who we are as a people, and how much we are willing to change about it. In economic development, culture matters very much.” . I know his words can give hope to every Filipino who will read his work. He inspired us for us to move, to do something about it. We just need perseverance to use our strength, the positive side of our values, to be victorious.
Words are very powerful as good writing can make a difference to our lives. Indeed, I’m very thankful to the people who continuously inspire people through writing. I think they already did their part so it is our time now to do our part. It is not yet late as long as we start today. If you want a change, you must start it in yourself.
