Measured based on Point of View

Grown in different culture, beliefs and experiences, all of us may tend to view things differently. In a way, we set standards but a standard does not have standards for qualification. Things that surround us may be good or bad for us but it depends on how we will view it. So, does it mean that the so-called negative Filipino values could be the hope to be save some of the bad image Filipino have?

Searching for Filipino values in the internet, it lead me to an article entitled,” The Ambivalence of FilipinoTraits and Values”. Emerita S. Quinto stress out how Filipino sets standards. Comparing ourselves to the Westerners is a big no no because we are totally different to them. Filipinos standard is smallness while others are greatness. Our way of life will only look negative if we use their yardsticks in judging. Therefore, she stated the positive and negative effect of common values of Filipinos. Towards the end, she is pointing out that, “There is something strange in the very way we look upon success.” For me it’s not about how we achieve success. Every one of us can do anything we want to fulfill it. No one can judge our ways and to accomplish is the most important part.

We, Filipinos, are often considered to be small and average. Yes it’s true but with this uniqueness, we out shine others. We prove that even small things can make difference. Unusual way of living is absolutely alright if we judge it using our oriental yardstick.
